So, I decided to try to rub the stone (get your mind out of the gutter.) Unfortunately, not being a gravestone rubbing hobbyist (there are such things), I didn't have the proper equipment. I found an old Post-It presentation pad in the basement from one of R.'s previous jobs (I think) and a couple of old pencils and got this...
Doesn't really help much, I know. Except I think maybe it says D or O A Smith and not J. I need to get some proper supplies and try this again. Meanwhile, I've set the stone upright in my back yard. It's raining now, so I'll take some pictures later.
